Gala 2017 - About the Gala

Attention Gala Attendees: We've added a FAQ and will be updating it as we get closer to the show date.

The Reviews Are In!

“On stage, she dazzled … she was many people at the same time — all of them vying for brilliance.”
— Devika C. Mehta, India Journal (9/14/2017), a review of Sarabhai’s 9/6/2017 performance in which she “stunned an audience” at the Irvine Barclay Theater, Irvine, CA

“I’m reminded of what President Obama said about the Hamilton cast when they performed at the White House: What an incredible gift … it is rare when a piece of art can remind us about what is best in ourselves. … So honored to have witnessed the premier of Finding My Voice!”
— Mora Oommen, Facebook, following Sarabhai's 9/16/2017 performance at the Menlo Atherton Performing Arts Center, Atherton, CA

“You completely deserved that standing ovation! Such a stunning composition that revealed so much ultimate truth. … You are such an exquisite dancer and choreographer, and your disciples are carrying on your work so wonderfully, with such fine technique and sensitivity, and stamina. … May you create forever …”
— Amy Catlin Jairazbhoy, senior ethnomusicologist and Indian music scholar at UCLA

About the Gala

Now in our 35th year, this year we’re celebrating the untapped potential of our beneficiaries, and the power of that potential to make dreams come true. The people we serve in India live with poverty and discrimination every day of their lives, and often are never exposed to what is possible. We work toward providing access to education, basic healthcare, and independence and safety for women. We believe that with the right tools, we can help empower those marginalized by society. By nurturing potential we are ultimately harvesting dreams.

Our annual Gala is not just a celebration of the people we serve. It’s also a time to honor those who have made it possible to transform the lives of thousands of people: YOU. It’s because of you that we have been able to expand our programs and assist more beneficiaries in more locations.

We hope you will join us for an evening of dance and celebration on Saturday, September 30, 2017.

About the Show

Love Songs to Shiva - & - Finding my voice

For this year’s show, we are proud to announce two spectacular dance productions from Mallika Sarabhai & Company. “Love Songs to Shiva” and “Finding My Voice” blend classical and contemporary Bharatanatyam, a traditional art form that reflects the culture of India at its best.

Mallika Sarabhai is a modern legend as a dancer, choreographer, thespian, writer, publisher, filmmaker, and more.

With her smoldering beauty, mellifluous voice, and sensual elegance, she dazzled audiences …,” wrote one journalist following a 2015 appearance at Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C. As our guest, you will experience Mallika’s mastery and devotion to the art — and power — of dance. As she so eloquently puts it:

Art is creation of beauty but it is also a powerful language that can express our deep emotions most effectively.
